About IYLC
Conference presenters are asked to prepare highly engaging, culturally competent workshops appropriate for our Emergent Bilinguals (students of English as a Second Language). Presenters are asked to consider one of three priority topics:
- Leadership and Communication
- College and Career
- Culture and community
We also welcome presentations related to intercultural communication, community activism, teamwork and self-esteem.
Conference Mission
The conference is an opportunity for students to learn and network with fellow students, educators and community leaders in the Portland area.Conference Curriculum
The conference curriculum consists presentations focusing on Leadership/Communication, College/Career, and Community/Culture.Workshops are formatted as 45 minute sessions.
Audience
The approximately 400 ½ûÂþÌìÌà Emergent Bilinguals (EBs) in attendance at the Conference will represent over 80 different spoken languages. Students will range from 9 – 12 grade. English ability will vary among all grades. EBs are highly motivated to participate and learn, but can occasionally be reluctant to share and open up in unfamiliar environments. Presenters are asked to prepare workshops that contain visual or multimedia elements that can engage English speakers at any level. The online student conference will begin at 9:00 a.m. and finish at 2:30 p.m.
