    YES to College

The YES to College Program offers students the chance to prepare for and complete their GED and then continue into college at PCC. Students who are English language learners can focus on developing English proficiency by starting in ESOL classes.  All students work closely with a College Success Coach to help them transition to the college environment and Success Coaches provide support, academic advising and career guidance. YES to College contracts with ½ûÂþÌìÌà to offer students a scholarship to the program. There is no cost to the student while working toward a GED or developing English skills.

Once students have completed their GED, they may be eligible to continue in the program to work towards a college degree or career training. Their college tuition and books may be paid for through the program for up to a year.

The YES to College program is for students who:

    • Are interested in a variety of academic opportunities, including receiving a GED and/or a high school diploma and college credits towards a college certificate or Associate degree

    Or for students who:

    • Are non-native English speakers, and are working on building English proficiency

    Gateway to College

The Gateway to College Program offers students the opportunity to complete a high school diploma while earning a significant number of college credits.

The Gateway to College Program is for students who:

    • Have left high school before graduation or who are not on track to graduate
    • Have fewer than 17 high school credits. (Some exceptions can be made)
    • Have at least an eighth grade reading level
    • Are interested in pursuing a college degree and ready to commit to academic excellence
    • Have struggled with grades and attendance

Students start in a Gateway to College learning community at one of the PCC campuses. In their learning community, they take core classes and develop the study skills they need for college success.

Once students successfully complete the learning community courses, they transition into regular college classes.  With the support of their College Success Coach, students take PCC classes and earn both high school and college credits for each class. Since students earn dual credit, they’re able to accumulate a significant number of college credits while completing their high school diploma.

All students work closely with a College Success Coach dedicated to their success. In order to be successful in the program, students will need to be in class about 20 hours a week and do three to four hours of homework per day. Gateway to College contracts with Portland Public School District to offer students a scholarship. Students pay student fees each term (about $100). Students may apply to get fees waived.
