Course Offerings
BandBand students will learn the fundamentals of band instruments, learn how to read music, and develop a great sound. Grading is based on effort, in-class participation, rehearsal etiquette, playing tests, extracurricular rehearsals, and performances. Please note, that students wishing to learn percussion, guitar, or piano should sign up for those classes. Beginning and intermediate band is offered.Concert BandConcert Band is a beginning-level course in which students learn to rehearse and perform in a contemporary, popular music venue via a small band. Educational emphasis is placed on individual preparation, group communication and collaboration, creative exploration, music technology and stagecraft, small group leadership skills, and expanding students’ knowledge of the contemporary music industry. Styles studied and performed include any major popular genres (i.e., rock, pop, R&B) and their related sub-genres. Students can possess previous vocal and/or instrumental experience related to popular genres (solo voice, acoustic and electric guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, etc.). Extra rehearsals are scheduled as needed and members should expect at least two public performances.Concert ChoirConcert Choir is a group performance class open to everyone interested in vocal music. This ensemble will perform a variety of SATB choral works covering many genres. Grading is based upon effort, in-class participation, rehearsal etiquette, singing and written tests, extracurricular rehearsals, and performances. Members will learn the fundamentals of choral singing with a focus on tone production, balance, and style. In addition to concert performances, students will have opportunities to develop solo and ensemble skills for school, district, and state festivals.Guitar (Beginning)In this course, students will learn the fundamentals necessary to play the guitar. Students will learn various guitar-playing styles including pop, rock, and classical. Additionally, the class will cover the basics of rhythm, melody, and chord function. Grading is based on effort, in-class participation, rehearsal etiquette, and playing tests. Please note, that while the skills and knowledge learned can transfer directly to the electric guitar and bass, the class will focus on the acoustic guitar.PercussionPercussion is a group participation class. Grading is based on effort, in-class participation, rehearsal etiquette, playing tests, extracurricular rehearsals, and performances. Skills taught: rehearsal techniques, music notation reading, stage presence, and the ability to work together. All facets of percussion technique will be explored, including mallets, snare drum, drum set, auxiliary percussion, and drum line. Members may be assigned to perform in a variety of ensembles depending on skill level, and the musical needs of the class, department, and/or school.PianoIn this course, students will learn the fundamentals necessary to play the piano.
