Japanese 1/2
In the first-year Japanese class, students will build a basic foundation of the Japanese language through the development of the language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students will learn to communicate on familiar topics such as self-introduction, family, hobbies, and everyday life. Students will learn the Japanese sound system, hiragana and katakana (Japanese characters) and begin study of kanji (Chinese characters).

Mandarin 1©\2 is a communication class designed to help you begin to speak, read, write, and understand Mandarin. Through music, poetry, art, and other dynamic media, you will be able to actually use the language you are learning. In Mandarin 1©\2 the teachers emphasize the skills from the beginning. It requires dedication and time to learn vocabulary.Mandarin/Chinese Immersion 1-2
Mandarin Immersion 1-2: This course is a full-year course designed for the 9th grade Mandarin immersion students. Students will utilize their acquired skills and knowledge of the Chinese language and culture to further explore varied content and issues about China and its people through reach-out communication and teacher-guided learning. The course emphasizes an integrated approach to exercising listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities with self-managed learning strategies. Students at this level dig deeper into popular topics while learning to provide details of events, feelings, and people. Reading and writing are formal requirements throughout the year. Students are expected to be able to read texts of various genres and topics at an intermediate level of Chinese while responding through speaking and writing with developing judgment and accurate language.

Spanish 3©\4 is a communication class that continues to highlight oral proficiency, reading and writing in Spanish. Students practice the speaking and listening skills you learned in Spanish 1©\2. Students will continue to build vocabulary and learn Spanish sentence structure. Students ask and answer questions in complete sentences. Time and dedication are required to learn verb conjugation.Spanish 5-6
With a continued focus on oral proficiency, in Spanish 5©\6 you will continue to improve your skills and important grammatical and cultural concepts. The Internet will be used for research and support. Past tense is the grammatical focus of the class. Students are expected to communicate in Spanish with teachers and peers. Time and dedication are crucial to learning verb conjugation. While two years of Spanish study are the minimum requirement for admission to the Oregon University System, three years are recommended.
