Russian Immersion at Kelly
Our goal for students in the Kelly Dual Language Immersion Program is for students to become bilingual, bi-literate and develop cross-cultural skills while achieving at a high academic level in two languages. Kindergarten through fifth grade students enrolled in Russian Immersion develop fluency in reading, writing, speaking and listening in English and Russian. They are proficient in all academic subjects, meeting or exceeding state and district standards in English and Russian. Here is a breakdown of how much time students spend learning each language in district-adopted curriculum.
Dual Language Benefits
Students perform as well as or better than non-dual language students on standardized tests of Language Arts and/or Math administered in English. Immersion students typically develop greater cognitive flexibility, demonstrating increased attention control, better memory, and superior problem solving skills as well as enhanced understanding of their primary language. Students are better prepared for the global community and job markets where a second language is an asset.
Why Russian?
The US Government has designated Russian as a critical need language for US national and economic security. As a result, the College Board added Russian to the advanced placement exam offerings and the National Security Education Program now funds advanced level Russian language flagship programs at a number of universities.
Russian Immersion After Kelly
The Russian Immersion program continues at Lane Middle School where students earn four high school credits in eighth grade. At Franklin High School, immersion students work towards the Oregon Seal of Biliteracy and university credits. Our Russian Immersion students are active members of the global community who are prepared for high school, college and beyond.
