• Single Subject Acceleration in Mathematics

Application Window Closed as of 3/31

Single Subject Acceleration in Mathematics (SSA-M) is a process that allows students to be accelerated in mathematics instruction by one grade beyond their grade level for the following school year. SSA-M is intended to support exceptional cases and provide an appropriate rate and level of learning for the small subsection of students for whom this is not possible within the current grade level curriculum.

Note: Students must be in grades 2-5 at the time of application (for acceleration in the 2025-2026 school year) and demonstrate proficiency in mathematics standards for the grade level above their current level.

    Procedure:

    1. Before Applying: Students applying for SSA-M should have multiple indicators that they are working above grade level in mathematics. Possible indicators include:
      1. Fall and winter MAP scores for the current grade should be at or above the 95th percentile. Note: grade 2 students do not take the MAP. Classroom assessments should indicate being highly proficient in all domains.
      2. Winter i-Ready scores should indicate above grade level in the areas of "Algebraic Thinking" and "Number Sense" and be late grade level or above for the other domains.
    2. Application (completed by family): Families will provide information about the child, give consent, and acknowledge receipt of information through an online application. All applications must be submitted between March 1st and 31st, 2025.
    3. Teacher Reflection: Teachers of students applying for SSA-M will provide a reflection on the student's math proficiency to the TAG department.
    4. Assessment: Students will complete a formal written assessment to demonstrate proficiency in the major standards for the grade level above their current grade level. Assessments will be administered at schools after the application window closes and scored by district office staff.
    5. Determination and Notification: The TAG department will make SSA-M acceleration determinations based on a portfolio of evidence that will include district-adopted assessments (MAP Growth, iReady), written formal assessment, and teacher feedback. Families will be notified by May 30, 2025. All communication regarding SSA-M will be managed by the TAG department.

Questions can be directed to the TAG office through the ½ûÂþÌìÌà customer service portal, Let's Talk or at ppstag@pps.net
