Site Council: 11.12.21 Agenda and Meeting Minutes

In attendance: Beyth Hogue-Greenetz, Serene Bertram, Mai Quan, Gina Kim-Folston, Cathy Murray, Audrey Rozell

    Agenda

    1.  Introductions & Welcome

      1. Gratitude, Grounding, Brain Break

    2. Check in

      1. What’s Going Well:  Pleased with how normal my kids feel going to school.  This is their first entry.  Masks, distancing and all the protocols haven’t been an issue for them. Administration/teachers have made school feel safe.  Good for kids to be back in person. Doing better academically than during virtual learning. Excited that younger students are able to get their vaccines. Appreciates the weekly newsletters.  Happy to have families volunteering and enjoying each others’ company. Likes seeing students volunteering in the cafeteria.  They have been so helpful and happy to help.  Enjoying the K-5 model and the 5th graders being the leaders of the school. Joy in the community.

      2. Concerns: younger students, in particular, had a difficult time accessing number and letter recognition. Other students really excelled on-line and need to be challenged more now that they are back in school. Heather Robertson is offering support to students needing additional assistance and TAG students. 75% of students are not meeting the grade level standards, coming out of the pandemic.

      3. Ideas: Looking at the possibility in the future of having volunteers working one on one with students on their skills.

      1. Commitment to Racial Equity

      2. Reframe as a K-5

      3. : Empathy, Collective Wellbeing, Integrity, Belonging Collaborate, Equity, Justice, Curiosity, Wonder, Growth, Adventure, Meaningful Work,

    3. Southeast Guiding Coalition Update: meeting and discussing feedback from families this Thursday.  3rd option will probably not be available. Safety around the boundaries. There are benefits from keeping students east of 82nd, especially from a diversity standpoint. City planners should be involved in this meeting regarding crosswalks. ½ûÂþÌìÌà creating a budget for crossguards. Curious as to whether racial and socio-economic demographics are taken into account when creating these boundaries.  The housing market has influenced who is able to purchase in the area.  Marysville is much more “white” than it was 9 years ago.  Students could be grandfathered and boundary changes would apply for incoming 2022 or we would wait until 2023 for changes to be made. There is a concern with doing it “too soon”.

    1. Next Steps/Plans:

    1. Next Meeting Date and Time: Mid-December

Site Council: 3.5.21 Agenda and Meeting Minutes

In attendance: Cathy Murray, Serene Bertram, Michael Rehana, Alex Phan, Mai Quan, Beyth Hogue Greenetz, Gina Kim-Folston, Audrey Rozell

    2/12

    1.  Introductions & Welcome

      1. Gratitude, Grounding, Brain Break:

    2. Racial Equity work: ½ûÂþÌìÌà is adopting racial equity a distinction between social justice/racial justice work vs. multicultural/ identity work, how are we building our children to take their education and apply it without us (independent learning), looking at systems disruptions in classrooms, appreciating our Vietnamese community: Mai and Hang’s work with the families, “opening windows and mirrors”, identity work: not everyone has that rich history and sometimes struggle with the lessons (i.e. where did your name come from?), being cautious to not create additional harm to our BIPOC students, some curriculum and conversations  have not been seen through the lens of equity (many worksheets and teaching styles are still coming from a white, middle class perspective)

    3. Hybrid Update:

      1. Survey Results 70% response so far : only K-5 so far, but will need to have one for our middle school families. A schedule would need to fit for all grade levels

        1. 57% of those responding want hybrid: the challenge (still going on in PAT bargaining) is if only ½ want to come back, then some shifting of teachers.  Want to make sure that the students at home are still getting the attention they need. Is hybrid (with its’ limited days and hours) a benefit compared to what they are getting now virtually on a daily basis? Hard for families that work to get students to and from school in the middle of the day.  Not enough transportation.  Parent: Is it worth it for the short number of months left? Cathy: Could help with building stamina, connections with other kids (mental health part/socialization), doesn’t feel that simulcast would be effective, teachers are able to give directed instruction. Parent: Wondering if Quarter 5 is going to happen Cathy: Some plans for Quarter 5, money was held back to fund the possibility of a Quarter 5 idea.  May be difficult to get staff that will want to do a Quarter 5.  Parent: Concerns about disruption if someone were to get sick. The impact of the back and forth of students being able to come or not come to school Parent: Students going into the next grade level and not being prepared for the next grade.  Cathy: Some students have actually accelerated during this time; others are behind. Quarter 5- students invited who have fallen behind. Academics, but also social opportunities

    4. Staffing for 2021- 2022

      1. Added .5 Music: we don’t have a lot of hiring to do this year, but will be hiring a music teacher, reaching out to PSU

      2. Maintained- AP, Instructional Coach, Counselor, .5 Social worker and full time Instructional Specialist, .5 Art, full time Librarian, 1 ESL teacher, .5 ESL EA, 1 Resource Room teacher

Losing some of the diversity of our staff due to middle school teachers to Kellogg Middle School.  All our MS staff were offered a position.

Heather Robertson is staying on as an Intervention Specialist. Janice Holstine is also remaining.

    1. Southeast Guiding Coalition Update: Marysville may stay at 270 students for a couple of years until rebalancing takes place. Creston moved into feeding Kellogg. Focus is on Harrison Park and Bridger.

    2. Successful Schools Survey 2021

    3. Air purifiers for every classroom, feeling good about the PPE, protocols and the cleaning. Still working out the logistics.

    4. Next Steps/Plans:

    5. Next Meeting Date and Time:

Site Council: 2.12.21 Agenda and Meeting Minutes

    In attendance:

    1.  Introductions & Welcome

      1. Gratitude, Grounding, Brain Break:

    2. Commitment to racial equity: Ongoing lessons and Author Visit: Education historically has traditionally centered on whiteness.  As educators and administrators we are intentionally using the lens of equity in our planning.  Targeted Identity Work and now moving to Anti-Racism Work.  Flags honoring Black Lives Matter Movement. Studying systematic Racism.  Jordan Theory, a black author, will be “visiting” our school for an author’s visit.  Assemblies for K-2, 3-5.  Seminar for Middle Schoolers, a seminar with black boys. Anchor text work that focuses on racial identity. WIll be used the rest of the year.  Focus on how to be an upstander and also looking at intersectionality and privilege. Serene would love feedback and suggestions. Students of color can opt in and out or participate in affinity groups.  The identity lessons have been created by our equity team.  ½ûÂþÌìÌà has not adopted a curriculum.  Black Lives Matters in Schools is a National curriculum.  Peer to peer impact is occurring more at a middle school level.  May need to involve black and brown families before encouraging peer to peer in the younger grades.

    3. :  K-5 first. Model proposing: hybrid (2 hours in the morning and the afternoon) or continued distance learning.  Keeping classrooms intact. Still trying to figure out the simulcast. All specials will be asynchronous. No meals or food.  Concerns with students getting the experience/education they need in person vs. continuing with virtual learning. Hopeful for summer programming; being able to be outside. A video walkthrough of the classroom, how it looks, how drop-off/pick-up occurs, who will take my Kindergartener to their classroom. What is the plan for exposure? What is considered an exposure? Do I have the choice to change my mind whether to participate in hybrid or not? Yes. Are the students going to have a chance to socialize in any way, bathroom procedures, water break procedures? Can Site Council see the survey results opt-in/out? Concerns about how the school will be divided. Concerns about whether students’ teachers are vaccinated or not.  Percentages of how many are vaccinated may be able to be shared. Parents have felt very supported.  Sadly parents from other schools have not necessarily felt the same.

    4. Transition from Marysville K8 to Marysville Elementary: giving students an opportunity to say goodbye to the building and each other.  Cathy will get the staffing information next week for next year.  Opportunity to meet again and figure out our main priorities. Parents offered to back our decisions if the district pushes back. Parents would like to know which staff will be going to Kellog MS. Goes by seniority and licensure. If not able to transfer then first choice of open positions in MV, if interested. What about our specialists?  They are eligible to transfer. Can no longer accept transfer students that are 5th graders.

    5. Southeast Guiding Coalition Update

    Agenda

    1.  Introductions & Welcome

      1. Gratitude, Grounding, Brain Break

    2. Review of last meeting  All schools have had a decrease in Title I funding.  About 50 new students have entered our school since October.  Lilac Meadows feeds into our school.  Looking for ways to support this community (staff and families).  Ellie and Christine are interested in supporting.

    3. Marysville Successful School Survey:   Have extended the Parent Survey deadline for surveys.  Tabling and a raffle. Rebalancing (the boundaries for how many students):  What is Kellog School going to look like?  How many schools will it be serving? Making sure parent voices are being heard as to what is best for our students. The hope for middle school is to be able to give them extended opportunities for specials (music, sports, etc.). Possible feeder schools for Kellog would be: Bridger, Creston, Arleta, Harrrison Park, Lent and Marysville.

    4. Parent Student Teacher Conference Survey Results: Some timing issues, but mostly were happy to connect with their teachers.  Thanksgiving Week works well. VIetnamese perspective:  Felt welcomed and clearing showing students’ achievement, good relationships with the teacher and peers, would like to participate with the teacher as much as possible, would like to be part of providing feedback on middle school. Have students talk about middle school with incoming students and parents. Spring music performance in the evening (ideas included Diversity Night, Art Show and Marysville Gives Back)

    1. Celebrate and Elevate:

Staffing Plan for next year: Reviewed staffing with Site Council.  Was not able to collaborate with Site Council because the due date came early.

Courtyard Beautification Committee: Depaving to plant trees, fire funds for a floor mural.  Have to be careful with trucks pulling into the area.  Maybe have a Courtyard Beautification Committee meeting during Social Hour and invite Rather Severe.

Music Program: Going to continue the grant next year.  Hoping to expand to 4th grade. Once a week.  Wants to get it in the schedule earlier, but won’t start until October.  Wants to schedule the stage space more due to space limitations in the classrooms.

    1. Next Steps/Plans: Idea was proposed to inform parents/students of their next year teachers

Jessica suggested having peer mediators that take on issues and resolve with their peers.

Christine brought up restorative justice.  Serene has a background and will be practicing RJ circles weekly with the 7th graders.  It’s a district initiative. We have an RJ coach in the district. Would be great to have it talked about in Mindful Morning.

Serene: ½ûÂþÌìÌÃ- graduate goal is our students will be anti-racist leaders. RJ works well with moving students in this direction. Possibility of inviting a Resolutions NW leader to come talk.  Middle Schoolers are talking about having affinity groups (specifically a Students of Color Union or a Black Student Union). Making sure it’s showing up in the curriculum

Jessica: Having conversations about race before events happen is important.

    2. What is a Site Council  Cathy provided a handout with guidelines to holding Site Council and ways to formailize it.  Intentionally reaching out to families. Get families involved in the details, help guide the school and decisions, determining where we are putting our resources (especially in Spring when we are budgeting for teachers).  Add a tab on the website with Site Council information, balance of staff and families (an equal voice), include students occasionally for perspective.

Jessica suggested having peer mediators that take on issues and resolve with their peers.

Cathy discussed different forms of classrooms for students who have special emotional needs. General ed with para (focus classroom), push in to general ed, SES classroom, schools like Pioneer.

A survey will be going out with regards to Student Success Act funding for our school.  Parent voice is needed. Money will be given next year. We could have an evening to conduct the surveys in the future.

    Peer mediation

5th graders working with younger grades

Sarah Holmes has been parterning with staff to lead Restorative Justice groups with middle school. If you want to sit in sometime, let us know.  Importance of checking in with families.

Working on systemizing family communication. Need to regulate the entire community. Giving opportunities to share their experiencec.

Corey Seymour (13 schools in our cluster)- will be doing a BSU meeting with our middle school students once a month. First one in December

Nicole Watson, PAT representative, social justice equity leader Ideally trying to meet with schools trying to get in front or racial events before they happen. Helped us lead our first meeting. Practicing the agreements with each other. Not talking about situations that are too personal.  Need a toolbox to talk to our children. Uncovering the social construct/implicit bias. Developing the white ally, interrupting racism and gaining multiple perspectives.

    Gender inclusivity work, as well.

*The ways boys treat the girls of the younger students (Jessica).  Having the entire class talk about situations. Using teachable moments but also getting in front of it.  Interupting patterns at a young age. Great for children to practice at home, too (especially if there is gender power at home)

Piloting toolbox. Caring School Communities (has much more circles and training teachers with a unified message).  Good segway to talk about gender. How situations affect a community. Possibility of using a book club to facilitate conversations.

Reviewed the Student Successful Schools Survey. We do best in our student/teacher relationships. 5th and 7th graders were given the survey last February. Developing sense of belonging.  How do we foster that home school communication so that students are “talking about ideas from class”.

*How often are people disrespectful to others at your school (can be used for the discussion up above). May need to unpack this question.  With whom and where is it taking place.

What makes you feel like you belong here?

We targeted middle school this year:  Engagement and Sense of Belonging. 8th graders are scoring higher now that they are middle schoolers. Project based curriculum for middle schoolers.  Had a three days immersion experience with building robots. Drama.

Parents don’t know how to talk about puberty with their students.  Develpmentally skills to have communication.

Looked at Sara Fuller’s data on her survey

Patroling the pick up time at the east side driveway.  Cars are pulling in the fire lane. Maybe use the chain, or cones with signs.  Monitoring safety. Colorful sign. Ride and walk to school day. Stanchions. Safety person down there with an adult.  More crosswalks. One way. Have enough people complain at once it will move up the list. If you add school, it gets elevated.
