You do not have to document, or give a source for, information that your readers could be expected to know (e.g., the "Constitution," the "Declaration of Independence" or how to boil water. For all other material, you must correctly document your sources (citations) in the "bibliography" or "works cited" listing at the end of your report.  Give credit by correctly citing whatever sources you use. West Sylvan & Lincoln use the MLA citation style. Citations follow a specific protocol, so pay attention to every period, comma, quotation mark, capital letter, etc.

Use parenthetical citations to give credit to authors in the body of your essay. Parenthetical citations are in parentheses. Place the first item from the citation, followed by the page number, if appropriate. Generally, the first item is the author's last name (Allen 193).
