Throughout the year, I read books about cultural diversity, geography, non-fiction and character education. Students will have the opportunity to discuss issues of race, empathy, friendship, bullying, manners and problem solving.

First graders will also be reminded of library expectations:

• Returning books on time in order to borrow new books for the week.
• Book location skills/ Shelf marker use
• Library manners
• Book Care

Please help your child at home:

• Please use your public library to supplement your child’s book needs.
• Send damaged books to school for repair. Please do not mend them at home. Damaged books may be billed to you depending on the condition.
• Respect library materials.                
• Locate a safe place for books out of reach from pets and younger siblings.
• Remind students to put library books in their backpacks when they are done reading at home.
• Remind students which day of the week is library class to help them return books on time.

Students enjoy hearing book talks for Chapter Book introductions. Students learn the process of renewing their books when they begin seriously reading chapter books.

This year we will read five books for the Patricia Gallagher Award.  All first and second graders will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite story. Students were asked to focus on the message of the story, the illustrations, and the characters to make their voting decision. Once the students vote, they anxiously wait on the announcement of the winner on May 1st.
