Mr. K’s class has been studying the Nez Perce, including their uses of native plants, and Mr. Patterson’s class has been studying natural resources. To connect this learning, we did a service project together with Friends of Pier Park and Columbia Slough Watershed Council. First, we learned about Oregon’s native plants! We now know how diverse native plants help the wildlife and the earth in our local environment.  Then, we planted native plants at Pier Park together!

We planted 200 native shrubs and 12 vine maple trees.  Some of them even got names! We get to visit these new plant buddies at the park and grow together with them!

We also worked together to create Gelli plate botanical prints with cuttings of the native plant varieties we planted at the park. Students worked in teams of 4 and individually to create beautiful artwork inspired by our “Next Door Nature” at Pier Park! Sales from the calendars benefit our Sitton field trip fund.

The arts are fundamental to children's creative expression and their overall growth and learning. Integrated into core curriculum, they enhance comprehension and engagement. On their own, they nurture self-esteem and increase whole-brain activity. The arts are our greatest tools to promote creativity in the classroom. Sitton students receive art instruction every week from our amazing art teacher, Ms. Condron-Lee.

  • Meet Sitton's Art teacher, Ms. Condron-Lee!
